Survivor

While driving the backroads of Vancouver Island, I drove past a small gap in the trees and discovered a beautiful emerald green lake. What I saw next was straight out of a fairytale. I slammed on the brakes and came to a stop as a dust cloud filtered through the open car windows. Here is where I used a landscape photographer's most useful tool...the u-turn. Safely off the side of the road, my eyes confirmed this magical sight. A natural bonsai Douglas Fir not just growing, but thriving on top of an old weathered Douglas Fir stump. What a perfect metaphor for determination, persistence and strength. This tiny tree (just 18” tall) was showing the whole world that given impossible odds, life finds a way to survive. Life will always go on.

Survivor was captured using a long exposure technique. The camera is mounted on a tripod while keeping the lens open for 60 seconds. The longer the exposure, the more each ripple in the lake would fade to infinity, leaving a soft background and the perfect canvas for this metaphorical tree to teach life lessons. Over 3 days I accumulated 277 failed long exposure attempts, trying for zero movements in the branches, fine leaves and even the hidden spiderwebs. A tough task given the westside of Vancouver Island is one of Canada’s windiest regions. What you see here is the 278th attempt.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
