Diamonds In The Sky
Two Jack Lake in Banff National Park is where my night photography exploration first began back in 2007. At this time I only had an entry-level camera, but still wanted to experiment with capturing the feeling of being under the vast night sky. It was always so peaceful out there, just me and the stars. Between old camera technology and my lack of composition knowledge, this only allowed a conceptual image that night. However, the seed had been planted…
Fast forward 15 years, and I was back at the same location during the summer solstice, still trying to photograph what I referred to as my “holy grail” night image. Over the years, I developed skills to better understand how to showcase this scene and also now had a camera designed to properly capture and showcase the milky way in all its glory. Not only did the stars and planets have to align on this night, but the wind had to die down completely. Even the slightest hint of a breeze wouldn’t allow the faint stars to be seen in the reflection. Finally, all the elements came together as Jupiter and Saturn revealed themselves in the early hours, like diamonds in the sky. What an experience to not only witness but photograph this fleeting moment during the darkest part of the night, on the longest day of the year.
