Epicentre

There are galactic moments that span beyond our comprehension. As a photographer, I’ve found myself chasing these dark scenes, but none of them quite like this.

I’ve photographed the milky way hundreds of times over my career, but it was time to go beyond the regular midnight missions. This is where ‘Epicentre’ was born. Rising above the summer sky is the galactic core, the most defined section of the milky way. Within the galactic core is an area referenced as the 'epicentre', the centre point of our galaxy. It’s believed there’s a supermassive black hole there, diffused by the light of four hundred billion stars. There’s only a single day in the year where the epicentre aligns itself perfectly above the Middle Sister in Canmore.

After years of researching this alignment, I began to plan my composition. With only a tiny window to capture this scene, all the elements had to combine. And initially, they didn’t. For two consecutive years, my only window of time was obscured by either wildfire smoke or clouds, leaving the mountainside empty-handed.

In 2020, everything finally came together. As the night slowly crept to dawn, I could finally capture this elusive moment. The Epicentre and Middle Sister summit aligned in perfect symmetry above the early morning alpenglow, creating a volcanic-looking eruption of stars and galaxies. The camera was set up, the lens focused to infinity and the shutter pressed. Those 20 seconds of silence, waiting for the exposure to end felt like an eternity. I’ll never forget the moment the final image appeared on the back of my camera. What a sense of awe and majesty.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
