The Cabin
The Cabin is an image I chased for many years. Setting up the camera and finding a composition was the easy part. The hard part was aligning my dream conditions. I needed a large snowfall, enough to coat every single tree coinciding with a glacial lake that hadn’t frozen over yet. For years, during the first snowfall of the year, I set out to find these conditions. Either the snow was too light or the lake was covered in ice and snow.
Finally one fall, we had an extremely early season first snowstorm. Oct 3rd to be exact. With the highway closed east of Canmore, this was my chance to head west. I woke up early that morning as I knew the roads would be in terrible shape. After a tedious 2.5 hour drive through unplowed roads, I finally arrived at Lake Louise. I set up the equipment and tripod well before sunrise. This was my time to enjoy the location and wait for the best light. Not surprisingly, I was all alone. So peaceful. So quiet.
I wanted the viewer to feel how calm this moment really was. A long exposure of 30 seconds was the trick. It’s within this time where the magic happens, when you slow the shutter speed, it allows every little ripple in the lake to smooth out and create a painterly reflection.
