Starry Night

For a few days every year, the milky way arcs across my favourite mountains- the Inglismaldie Range- at Lake Minnewanka in Banff. To me, this is the perfect mountain, with its impressive scale, sharp cliffs and jagged peaks. I had been trying to align this shot for years, almost mistakenly coming across this phenomenon several years prior to this image. I noticed that the arc pivots across the night sky every night by just one degree, moving left to right. Even just a few clouds in the night sky would obscure the best part of the milky way, known as the Galactic Core. After extensive planning and many failed attempts, the night was perfect.

This scene was captured with an Astrophotography camera, where the sensor has a small filter known as the hydrogen-alpha modification, showing the purple and warm hues seen in the deepest part of the milky way. The foreground light is coming from the moon off the right-hand side. The best part of capturing images after dark is the whole exposure process. You find your composition, set up the tripod and fine-tune your composition. Then you begin the process of capturing the image (this being a 20-second exposure). To me, this is the best part of long exposure photography. Those 20 seconds seem to last an eternity, until finally the image reveals itself on the back of the camera, showing us what is often lost deep within the night sky.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
