Nakoda

Nakoda has to be one of my most memorable wildlife experiences. This image was captured in the late spring while hiking up the Lake O'Hara access road with the goal of a beautiful alpine lake.

But luckily, only 1 kilometer in, my plans changed for the better. From a safe distance away (thank goodness for zoom lenses), I first spotted a brown grizzly bear. I watched this beautiful bear for almost 20 minutes when to my shock, a second grizzly bear emerged from the woods to join her sibling. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I almost shrieked - a white grizzly bear!

Unlike the more common spirit bear, which is a white-coloured black bear... a white grizzly bear is considered a 1 in 4 million natural colour variant of the species and here I was, having this experience of a lifetime. These 3.5 year old siblings proceeded to splash around in the water and later meandered up to a dandelion patch, all cleaned up from their earlier bath time. In the early summer, dandelions make up most of a grizzly bear’s diet and they can often be seen grazing on this nutrient-rich meal throughout the rockies. You can imagine two grizzlies would make quick work of a lush dandelion patch… which is exactly what these two did. I was lucky enough to capture this moment in time as Nakoda looked towards me, in the midst of her meal. Locals have fondly named this bear Nakoda, which translates from the Stoney language to “local friend”. After spending several days alongside this bear, I truly believe this is the perfect name for her.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
