Under The Canopy
Step inside the enchanted Lace Leaf Maple, located at a public garden in Portland. This was the 4th year I returned to photograph my favourite species of tree. I spent 2 weeks watching this maple rotate through its colourful spectrum of fall hues. Green to yellow to orange to red. On the morning this was captured, the gardens were blanketed in thick rolling fog, common in the Pacific Northwest. This beautiful tree still had water droplets hanging from its leaves, the bark still shimmering with water residue.
I was curious about why this year's colour was so different from the previous years. I proceeded to ask the head gardener highly technical questions: nitrogen levels in the soil, groundwater levels etc. As a man of few words his reply still sticks with me to this day. He asked if I was around the previous weeks. I nodded yes. He asked if I had seen any rain or wind lately. I shook my head no. He then walked away without saying another word. I guess sometimes the explanation doesn't have to be too complex! Simply put, under perfect weather conditions, a healthy tree will hang on its leaves longer. A lesson I experienced the very next day when the rains hit….see what happened to the leaves in the next image, Maple Migration.
