The Great Grey Owl Project
From November through March, I concentrated on a single elusive subject, the great grey owl. Years before capturing this image, I had an experience I’d never forget. A brief moment in time that would become the driving force for this piece. A great grey owl flew right in front of me, landing on a nearby fence post. When the owl “hit the brakes” just before landing on its perch, the details in its wings were revealed for just a fraction of a second. This virtual snapshot became ingrained in my memory, something I knew I had to capture one day.
Years later I focused on finding and understanding this beautiful species. With these creatures being nocturnal, catching even a quick glimpse is a lucky sight. There was even a stretch of bad luck where I endured three 8-hour days without any sign of an owl. But as my favourite saying goes, “the harder you work, the luckier you become”. This proved true as eventually I found a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
A great grey perched high in a tree... actively scanning the forest for his next meal. Intently listening for a tiny vole moving just under the snow, pivoting its head in all directions. I moved to position the sun at my back, hoping the moment would come where the light reveals this long awaited scene. Finally, he jumped off his perch and headed straight towards me, all while keeping his eyes set intently on his prey. Slowing down to a hover is where this image was captured, all in just 1/2500th of a second.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.
Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.

How do you hang the aluminum pieces?
All of our pieces come ready to hang with wall bracket mounts or a wire connected to the frame on the back. More information on hanging can be found on our FAQ page.
What does ‘Limited Edition’ mean?
Limited Edition means there will only ever be 75 pieces (any size) produced of The Great Grey Owl Project. As the piece sells, the price increases. Once the edition sells out, there will never be another reprint of this photograph.
Can I pick up locally at the gallery?
Absolutely! We always prefer to meet in person and show you how incredible the photos look on the fine art aluminum. You can order online and request a pickup from our Canmore gallery location.
