Sunny With A Chance Of Turtles

I lived in Hawaii for a portion of my life, spending months diving every day, dreaming of capturing the ultimate turtle image. I have several thousand photos of turtles, but this image is a culmination of all of my dives and experiences merged together for one I won’t forget any time soon.

The best way to spend time with these prehistoric animals is through freediving. It’s a very natural experience. I spent time with this turtle before actually diving down with him. Getting acquainted, letting him know I wasn’t a predator. When I finally dove down, he seemed to be more interested in eating the algae off the rocks. Now this is a cooperative subject! Finally on one of the dives, he made his way from one rock shelf to another. This was the moment I had waited for, the sun was perfectly aligned. I headed in his direction, pushed the shutter trigger on the housing and hoped for the best. While returning to the surface I was able to quickly review the image. Sure enough, after many dives, this was it!

Fun fact: The age of a green sea turtle is roughly determined by shell width and tail length. This male, however, has a fairly rare characteristic only found in turtles around 100 years old. He has purple markings where the fin connects to his body. Similar to our hair turning grey. Once I figured this out I reviewed my entire catalog of turtles. To date, I’ve only seen this 4 times in a decade of diving.

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
