Land Of The Midnight Bear

Watch the story behind this once in a lifetime photo.

Midnight Bear began as a childhood memory. While on a late-night road trip driving home, my parents pulled off the highway and told my sister and I to look out the window. What I saw left a vivid scene etched in my mind for years to come; a large grizzly bear under the moonlight, his face faded into the darkness. Just enough light to see the faint silhouette. Fast forward many years later where I found myself in constant pursuit of tracking and photographing bears at night. For years, I called this the “Dark Bear Project”. This meant heading out with my friend Glenn for a 5-day road trip. A few days before and after the full moon. A project like this shouldn’t be a solo mission. Strength in numbers right?

After the 3rd day of sleeping during the day and tracking all night, the time had come. At last, the very moment I experienced as a child came full circle. As the moon rose over the mountains, I found myself watching a large male grizzly bear grazing in a field. The first images were too far away and a little blurry, clearly the excitement of this encounter made my adrenaline spike. Shaky arms and long telephoto lenses aren’t a great combo. Eventually, I laid on the ground, resting the camera and lens on a tree to steady my position. Crack, crack…I could now hear the twigs breaking under his massive weight. Slowly the bear made his way closer and closer to us. Autofocus was basically useless in these dark conditions, with every couple of his steps, I had to refocus the lens manually. This was the moment I had been waiting for… click, click, click. I rattled off a few images and had a feeling this was it. Back at the campsite later that night we reviewed the photos… and sure enough, all those years of pursuit had finally come to fruition. We screamed in celebration as we realized the image was perfectly captured, zooming into the file on my laptop and inspecting each hair illuminated by the moon. I hope you feel the excitement of this project the same way we did that night!

The Process Behind Fine Art Aluminum

White Aluminum: All of our pieces are made using a special printing process where ink is heat transferred directly onto a single sheet of white aluminum. We use this aluminum due to the luminescence of the metal surface and guarantee of lasting a century without any fading. The finished product has a brightness, colour vibrancy and clarity that cannot be rivalled with any other printing technique. Each piece also comes with a backing that gives the photo depth and allows it to float elegantly on your wall.

Finish: Each piece is finished with a unique Anti-Reflective coating developed specifically for fine art photography. The anti-reflective finish is perfect for a wide range of lighting situations while still producing a bright and vibrant image. The finish also includes a special UV coating to fully protect the piece from exposure to direct sunlight.
