Maple Migration
I arrived at the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon for my fourteenth consecutive day first thing in the morning. Having donated to the gardens, I had received a photographer's pass, which allowed me entrance into the gardens an hour prior to the general public. It had rained heavily throughout the night and had been quite windy. On this morning, almost all of the leaves with their beautiful colours like yellows, oranges and reds, were gone from nearly every tree as they had migrated to the ground below, hence the title Maple Migration.
Fairly close to the canopy tree were these black rocks. The true colour of these rocks was actually grey, but as they were still damp from the overnight rainfall, they had a black sheen that contrasted against the bright leaves that had fallen on the rocks. I did not place any of these leaves, this is a naturally occurring scene. I did however cheat a little as I centred the tripod over top of the yellow leaf so that it became the focal point of the scene. This is a fleeting image: the rain had just stopped, I was able to pull out my camera and take 10 to 15 compositions before the wind picked up scattering a clutter of leaves across the scene and the stones dried, becoming dull and lifeless. I find scenes like this a reminder to always seek out the beauty in nature, even when it is unexpected and fleeting.
